Japan holds a great deal the world has not seen. Not lost — simply not yet found.

I was born abroad to Japanese parents and spent my first eighteen years in six countries, Japan among them. Japan looks different from outside than it does from within. I learned early to hold both views at once, and to trust neither on its own.

For twenty years after university I worked between countries — between one country and another, one company and another. I know what that work rewards, and what it costs.

Sunward Japan turns that experience toward what Japan makes and largely keeps to itself: a woodblock print, a kitchen knife, a surfboard, a bicycle — and the maker and the place behind each. Know what a piece is and where it has been. Say so plainly, and say what is not known. Bring it to the people abroad who are looking for it — and when they come to Japan, bring them to the makers.

Six countries before I was eighteen; twenty years between countries since. That is where Sunward Japan begins.
